Magnesium oxide can supply magnesium as part of a balanced aquafeed mineral program, but the highest MgO percentage is not automatically the best choice for every formula or process. Buyers in Latin America should compare grade, particle characteristics, documentation and manufacturing performance before approving bulk supply.
Start with the nutritional and process objective
Define the target species, life stage, complete mineral profile, feed format and processing conditions. The nutrition team should determine the required magnesium contribution within the full diet. The purchasing specification should then translate that requirement into an appropriate ingredient grade and measurable acceptance limits.
Winstar Ingredients supplies magnesium oxide in 99%, 94% and 90% grades. These percentages refer to magnesium oxide content, not elemental magnesium. The product page identifies MgO as CAS 1309-48-4 and describes the appearance as white to off-white powder depending on grade.
Compare more than assay
- Confirm the analytical method and basis used for MgO assay.
- Review relevant impurity limits in the grade-specific specification.
- Check particle-size distribution and bulk density for handling and mixing.
- Evaluate reactivity only when it is relevant to the intended formulation.
- Request a batch COA for the commercial lot.
Two materials with a similar assay can behave differently in dosing, dispersion and the finished feed because of particle size, density and source characteristics.
Test dosing and blend uniformity
Run a representative premix or feed trial with the actual carrier and equipment. Observe flow from the feeder, dust, adhesion, segregation and blend uniformity. If the ingredient is first incorporated into a mineral premix, evaluate that premix through the full feed process rather than stopping at the small-batch mixer.
Include processing and water exposure in the evaluation
For pelleted or extruded aquafeed, review how the mineral system interacts with conditioning, extrusion, coating and final pellet quality. The complete formulation—not one ingredient alone—determines mineral balance and manufacturing performance. Water stability and nutrient availability should be evaluated under the buyer’s own protocol where relevant.
Build the supplier and import file
Request the current TDS, representative COA, SDS, packing details and storage guidance for the quoted grade. Available packing may include 25 kg bags, 50 kg bags and 1,350 kg bulk bags, subject to grade and order confirmation. Buyers should also confirm origin, labeling, customs classification and permitted feed use with specialists in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Argentina or the relevant Caribbean market.
Approve the grade through a staged process
- Compare technically suitable grades on an equivalent basis.
- Test handling and mixing at representative scale.
- Verify the complete feed against the nutrition and quality plan.
- Agree the commercial specification and packaging.
- Check the first shipment against the approved requirements.
