Latin American aquafeed buyers evaluating DHA algal oil need to compare more than DHA concentration. The source organism, reporting basis, oxidation limits, batch documents, packaging and cold-storage plan all affect technical and commercial suitability.
What material is being evaluated?
The documented product is crude DHA-rich oil derived from Schizochytrium microalgae through fermentation. Its commercial specification requires DHA ≥55% of total fatty acids. It is intended for evaluation in aquafeed supply chains and downstream refining.
Why the reporting basis matters
DHA may be reported as a percentage of total fatty acids or as grams per 100 grams of product. Those values are not interchangeable. Buyers should confirm the analytical method and reporting basis in the commercial specification and compare the batch COA on the same basis.
Which oxidation indicators should be reviewed?
The documented commercial limits include peroxide value ≤2.5 mmol/kg and anisidine value ≤10.0. Moisture and volatiles and insoluble impurities are each limited to 0.5%, while acid value is limited to 10.0 mg KOH/g. Batch results should be checked before release.
How should aquafeed formulators evaluate the oil?
Potential areas include marine and freshwater fish feed, shrimp and crustacean feed, broodstock nutrition and downstream refining. DHA algal oil may support partial replacement strategies when fish-oil availability or pricing is challenging, but it should not be assumed to replace fish oil completely. Formulators must evaluate species, life stage, total lipid profile, palatability, processing stability and destination-market requirements.
Packaging and logistics for Latin America
Typical options include 190 kg nitrogen-blanketed drums, 1,000 L IBCs and flexitanks up to approximately 21 metric tons. MOQ is negotiable. Order preparation typically requires 2–3 weeks, excluding international transit. Buyers should agree the storage temperature, antioxidant system, nitrogen protection and handling procedure before shipment.
